Deadspin commentator Patrick Redford made me laugh yesterday when he blew the lid off the story of Elizabeth Swaney, competing in the halfpipe for Hungary at the winter Olympics this week in South Korea. As Redford explains, “The Winter Olympics feature 2,951 of the world’s greatest athletes, and also this woman.” Rather than denigrating her performance, we should be lauding her ingenuity: she’s an American but through her ancestry managed to get on the Hungarian team—and she’s in the Olympics, baby.
